I am by no means a cake decorator. I’ve used character cake pans in the past, and some of the fancy icing tips, but really in all honesty I much prefer something a bit simpler. I totally am in awe of the women and men who spend there time making those cakes that look too good to eat, but that’s my problem…I don’t think I could spend so much time making one and then watch it being cut up and eaten!!
Here is an easy cake to make that is still really cute, doesn’t require any special skills, like working with fondants or decorating sugars. It’s appropriate for a baby shower, first birthday, or just a fun activity for parents and their children to work (and then eat!) together.
Easy Teddy Bear Cake
Ingredients
1 box chocolate cake mix
1/3 cup choice of instant pudding flavor
1 can frosting
Candies for decorating
1. Preheat oven to cake mix directions, and prepare the mix as directed on the box adding in the instant pudding.
2. Separate cake mix batter between 4 cupcake liners (about 1/3 cup in each liner), one 2 cup bowl or similar (about 1 1/4 cup batter), and one round cake pan (whatever batter is left). You can eyeball it if you like, and if you don’t have those kind of sizes improvise with other pans you own. You can see below how I separated mine.
3. Bake until the cakes are set. You may have to remove some earlier than others, testing in the middle for doneness about 20 minutes in and then every 5 minutes after that if needed.
4. Allow the cakes to cool, and then remove them from the pans/liners onto a flat surface. I used a large cutting board for our base.
5. Cut 2 of the cupcakes in half vertically. These will be your ears and upper paws. The other two cupcakes will be the lower paws. The larger round cake will be the body, and the smaller one the head. Place the cake together on your surface.
Yes, my cakes kind of fell apart….but it’s okay, because I’m covering them up with frosting 🙂
6. Using the prepared frosting ice the cakes together.
7. Then using the candies decorate your teddy bear.
We used Rolos, M&Ms, peanut butter cups, solid chocolate, licorice, cinnamon candies, and Laffy Taffy for our decorations.
A great place to stock up on wholesale candy is online. In summer it’s probably best to order things like gum, hard candies, the kind of candy that won’t melt when it’s delivered to your door in the heat! Closer to Halloween and Christmas you can order things for school treats and stockings. I always like to have candies and small chocolates around the house for impromptu baking or snacking events!
We really enjoyed eating our Teddy Bear Cake….but Teddy wasn’t too happy when the knife was cutting him up!
that is so cute an clever,an Im sure I can do this one,,yeahhhhhhh…im gonna try this for the grandkids, thanks for sharing
That is really cute! I love that you don't need extra pans!!
